Soil Conditioning by Grazing

Using animals to heal the land. This is highly informative.

Notes:

We are microbe farmers. A cow’s gut has lots of microbes.

Litter is organic material that grew and is then trampled on the ground. It produces soil. You use the animals in high density in order to trample down some litter. Stocking density is stock in pounds per acre. Bunch your animals together and rotate them through your paddies.

Chopping off the plant in spring causes it to send up a seed-head to compensate. It doesn’t develop deep roots. Shallow roots cause the grass to go dormant in the stress of summer so you’re then not getting production. When the worms go down deep due to dry soil, the microbial activity stops and the plants go dormant. Sworda (?) grass prevents this by shading it and attracting dew. Grass roots need to be at least 4-6 inches deep and should be a lot deeper.

People paid him $21/month per head to graze their cattle.

The cow needs the plant tips, which is where the energy is. Cows will cherry pick for this when first put onto a paddy. That removes whatever  was getting all the sun. This exposes other stuff. They’ll then go back after the undergrowth gets sun and eat that.

A healthy cow should shed off and reveal a shiny coat.

Spring grass has too much protein and too little energy. Put your cattle in tall grass and let them cherry pick it and trample it. This lets the animals pick their ideal mix of food and produces litter that builds soil. Don’t leave the cows on the ground so long that they eat that litter.

Let the plants mature in the spring before grazing;
Rotate onto a paddy 2-3 times a year;
1-2 times in growing season;
Graze the paddy once in dormant season, then let it grow into spring.
