Short Term

This form of asset accumulation ought to be called “trading” rather than “investing”. Traders might hold assets for minutes, hours, or as much as weeks. Options and futures are often used for this activity, and trading can be used to speculate or it can be used to hedge investments. It relies more on technical analysis of charts and associated tools and data more than on fundamental analysis of the business being invested in. In the extreme, some traders completely ignore fundamentals, won’t care what the underlying company is, and will avoid holding any position overnight.

Zero-days to expiration (ODE) options have become very popular. Typically cash-settled options are used for this. Examples of cash settled index options that you can trade are S&P 500 Index (SPX), Nasdaq 100 Index (NDX), Russell 2000 Index (RUT), Volatility Index (VIX), Dow Jones Index (DJX), S&P 100 Index (OEX), and the S&P 500 Mini Index (XSP). I notice SPY is not in that list.
